Key West, Florida — The Transportation Security Administration is using facial recognition software to pinpoint potential terrorists, including at airports, on long-haul flights.
TSA said in a blog post on Wednesday that it is using “FaceCore” technology that can identify faces in a photo from about 5 inches away.
The technology can identify the individual’s face from nearly 5 inches.
TSA has not confirmed how often it has used the technology.
TSA officials said they plan to start using FaceCore technology at the end of 2019, the beginning of 2020 and the beginning, sometime in 2021, of 2022.
The technology is also being used at the Orlando International Airport, where security officers are using it to determine whether to take off or land a passenger.
